Meanwhile, Thomas Lickona defines character education as a deliberate attempt to help a person he can understand, pay attention to, and carry out core ethical values.

What is the function of character education? In general, the function of education is to shape the character of a student so that he becomes a person who is moral, has a noble character, is tolerant, tough, and behaves well.

In addition to this, other functions of character education are as follows:

  1. Develop basic potential in human beings so that they become good-minded, good-hearted, and well-behaved individuals.
  2. Build and strengthen the behavior of a multicultural society.
  3. Build and improve the nation's civilization that is competitive in international relations.

The government is also very concerned about the character education of students. This is proven by the existence of the Character Education Strengthening program which is abbreviated as PPK. 

PPK is motivated by the idea that the development of human resources as the foundation of nation building, cannot be separated from the character of the man himself

The superior generation is the generation that not only excels in skills and knowledge but also must have a strong character.

The Character Education Strengthening Program (PPK) was launched by the government as an effort to realize the golden generation of 2045 who are intelligent, character, competitive, and have the spirit of Pancasila, the 1945 Constitution, the Republic of Indonesia, and Bhinneka Tunggal Ika.

The main values of the KDP that must be taught to students include religion, nationalism, independence, mutual aid, and integrity.

These values are expected to be instilled and practiced through the national education system so that they are known, understood, and applied throughout life in schools and in society.

Strengthening Character Education aims to:

Here are the characteristics that the teacher must teach students.

1. Religious

The value of religious character is a character that reflects faith in God Almighty which is manifested in the behavior of carrying out the teachings of religion and beliefs adopted, respecting religious differences, upholding a tolerant attitude towards the implementation of religious worship and other beliefs, living in harmony and peace with followers of other religions.

The implementation of this character value is shown in an attitude of peace-loving, tolerance, respect for differences in religion and belief, firm stance, self-confidence, cooperation between adherents of religions and beliefs, anti-bullying and violence, friendship, sincerity, not imposing the will, loving the environment, protecting the small and excluded. This is in line with the first precept of Pancasila, namely the One True Godhead.

2. Nationalist

The value of nationalist character is a character that guides a way of thinking, behaving, and doing that shows loyalty, concern, and high respect for the language, physical, social, cultural, economic, and political environment of the nation, placing the interests of the nation and state above the interests of the self and its group.

Nationalist attitudes can be shown through an attitude of appreciation for the nation's own culture, maintaining the nation's cultural wealth, being willing to sacrifice, excel, and excel, love the homeland, protect the environment, obey the law, discipline, respect for cultural, ethnic, and religious diversity.

3. Integrity

The character value of integrity is a value that underlies behavior that is based on trying to establish himself as a person who can always be trusted in words, actions, and work and has a commitment and loyalty to human and moral values.

The character of integrity includes an attitude of responsibility as a citizen, actively involved in social life, through consistency of actions and words based on the truth.

Examples of good character that reflect integrity include honesty, exemplary news, politeness, and love for the truth.

4. Independent

The value of independent character means attitudes and behaviors that do not depend on others and use all energy, thoughts, and time to realize hopes, dreams, and ideals.

Independent students usually have a good work ethic, are resilient, fighting power, professional, creative, courageous, and become lifelong learners. This character is very essential, especially when students are studying during a pandemic.

5. Mutual aid

The character value of mutual cooperation is a character that reflects the act of appreciating the spirit of cooperation and working hand in hand to solve problems together, establish communication and friendship, and provide help to people in need.

Students are expected to be able to show an attitude of respect for others, work together, be inclusive, be able to commit to joint decisions, deliberation and consensus, help, have empathy and a sense of solidarity, anti-discrimination, anti-violence, and volunteerism.

The characters that must be taught to students can be inserted into every learning activity in the school.

Example of a Character Education Strengthening Program (PPK) Implementation Model

  1. Character Education Strengthening Program (PPK) through Habituation Activities, including Starting the day with a Flag Ceremony (Monday), Apples, singing the song Indonesia Raya, National Song, and praying together. Read non-lesson books on PBP, and folklore, 15 minutes before starting learning, Before ending learning activities Students reflect, sing folk songs, and pray together.
  2. Character Education Strengthening Program (PPK) through Intra-Curricular Activity Activities, namely the integration of character education in Teaching and Learning Activities in all subjects
